Things to teach your upper elementary students blog post cover.

As both parents and teachers, we know how important it is to guide children in developing habits and skills that will serve them well throughout their lives. Upper elementary school is such an important time for laying the foundation for values and practices that will help our kids grow into well-rounded, responsible adults. There are so many things we want to teach our children. Here are three essential lessons for upper elementary students that we believe are important. Teach them the importance of Bible study, financial literacy, and health and nutrition.

Daily Bible Study

When it comes to lessons for upper elementary students, studying God’s word is so important. Daily Bible study is a practice that can have a big impact on your child’s spiritual growth. As our kids become BIG KIDS, they are beginning to ask deeper questions about the world around them and their place in it. Teaching them to turn to God’s Word for guidance, wisdom, and comfort is a gift that will last a lifetime. We encourage setting aside a time each day for your child to read a passage. Then they can reflect on its meaning, and spend a few moments in prayer or meditation. This will develop a habit of daily reflection and strengthen their relationship with God. As a parent, you can even read together and discuss what you’ve learned. This will foster an open and ongoing conversation about faith. Financial Literacy

Understanding money and how to manage it is a skill that will benefit your kids in so very many ways as they move into their teen years. Unfortunately, financial literacy is often overlooked in traditional education, so it’s important to take the initiative at home. Let us encourage you to start simple. If you have not done so, simply start by teaching your kids the basics of saving, spending, and budgeting. Basic activities like setting up a savings jar or opening a bank account can make these concepts more tangible. You might also consider beginning to involve your upper elementary kids in family financial decisions, like planning a budget for groceries or saving for a family vacation. By teaching them the value of money and the importance of making wise financial choices, you’re beginning to lay a foundation in their lives that will help in setting them up for a future of financial responsibility and independence.

Health and Nutrition

In upper elementary, kids are developing habits that will influence their health for the rest of their lives. It’s important to Help them develop healthy habits. Teaching them about the importance of a balanced diet, regular exercise, and good hygiene is so important. One way you can encourage healthy choices is by involving them in meal planning and preparation. Discuss the benefits of different foods and how they contribute to overall health. It’s also important to promote physical activity. Look to participate activities your kids enjoy. Playing a sport, riding a bike, or just taking a walk together as a family and all great choices! Emphasizing the connection between healthy bodies and minds will help your child understand the importance of taking care of themselves.

As parents, we have the opportunity to shape our children’s values and habits in ways that will benefit them throughout their lives. Teach them the importance of daily Bible study, financial literacy, and health and nutrition. This helps to equip them with some of the tools they need to grow into responsible, well-rounded adults. These lessons might seem simple, but they have a lasting impact that will help our our kids navigate the challenges and opportunities they’ll encounter as they grow. We know in the craziness of day to day life it can be hard to juggle all the things. But, let us encourage you to try to take the time to instill these values in your kids today, so they can carry them forward into tomorrow.
